Oil heat has a reputation for being simple, and for most of the winter it earns that. The failure mode is narrow and entirely predictable: the tank reaches the bottom, the burner pulls air along with the last of the fuel, and what should have been a routine refill becomes a bleed, a restart, and sometimes a nozzle and filter change. The fuel was the cheap part of that morning.

Manual monitoring is where the trouble starts. A gauge only helps on the days somebody remembers to walk out and read it, and the weeks people forget are exactly the weeks that consume the most fuel.
